I Was So Tired of Being Called Strong | Ember & Bloom

Greetings From

Ember & Bloom

Hi friend,

Today I want to talk about a word that gets handed to widows like a gift. And how heavy that gift can get to carry.

Strong.
You're so strong,
I don't know how you do it.

People mean it kindly, every time. But after Gary died, that word slowly stopped feeling like a compliment and started feeling like a job. Something I had to keep living up to, even on the mornings I could barely get out of bed.

Then one ordinary day, I hit a wall. I was just tired. Tired of holding it all together. Tired of being the strong one.

If you know that exact kind of tired, I wrote this week's blog for you. Because that tired isn't what you think it is.

You can read it here: When You're Tired of Being Brave

Like a lot of widows, I have more to say about this than one blog can hold. You can hear me talk it through on my podcast, Widow's Permission Slips — it's on my website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, and wherever you listen.

Just for You

Something to Try

This week, put rest on the calendar. On purpose.

Pick a day. Pick a time.
Block off 30 minutes and write it down like a real appointment.
Rest. That's the whole plan.

No chores. No errands. No being productive.
Sit. Lie down. Look out the window. Do nothing at all.

You don't have to earn it first.
It's already yours.
Keep the appointment the way you'd keep one for someone you love.
Because you are someone you love.

I'll meet you here again next Monday.
Until then, take one small breath and know that it is enough.

Hugs 💜💚

Greetings From Ember & Bloom Your husband died. You're a professional. And the question won't stop screaming in your head: How much of my grief do I show and still be seen as competent? The answer might surprise you. I had to figure this out when the heat went out in my office and I faced a situation I wasn't ready for. What I learned about that conversation—and what I asked for instead of what I confessed—might change how you think about telling your boss you're a widow. This week I'm wrote...

Greetings From Ember & Bloom After my husband died, people crossed my lines because they did not know where those lines were. And honestly, sometimes I did not know either. Grief changed so much about me. What I could handle. What I wanted to talk about. How much energy I had. Even what I needed from the people who loved me. A boundary is simply knowing what is okay for you and what is not. Then you tell the other person. I had a friend who kept asking when I was going to get back to...

Greetings From Ember & Bloom Hi there, I've been thinking a lot about the widows I talk with who are leaders. Superintendents. Nurses. Accountants. The ones holding families together while their own world has shifted. And there's something they all say to me. Most of us believe we have to make a choice: either we show up for work, or we grieve. Either we're strong, or we're falling apart. Either we hold it together, or we break. But what if that's not the choice at all? What if grief isn't...
